Free Clark Phrenic Mix Download

Ahead of his Button Factory gig on February 4th, Clark has just dropped a brand new MPC DJ mix on us. It was broadcast on 6Music last week and he now put it up on Soundcloud for us all to enjoy! As quoted from the Warp Records website Clark says of the mix:

"So I thought I was just innocently putting some of my favourite dancefloor material together for DJ sets, then found out via dirty wildfire rumors in Berlin, that all of a sudden I had a "secret side project going on", I was collaborating with Chicago Jack-House legends such as Waxmaster Maurice and DJ Hyperactive. Haha. "That could be ace" thought I. So without a few artists consent I decided to collaborate. Collaborations are always best when you sneak in from the side and shadow-box peoples tracks so they end up having a signature of your own.
A lot of that material is so deliciously stripped that it proved ripe to be embellished with the analogue machine-funk I was riffing out in the studio at the time.

There we go. Boom. Hope you enjoy it."

Video: Shobaleader One - Megazine

Squarepusher has joined a band or at least created one with "a bunch of people you may or not have heard of from other bands and projects" called Shobaleader One. In and interview over on the Warp Records site, Tom Jenkins reveals the aim of Shobaleader One "The overall aim is to articulate my music through the medium of a band. I always thought that a band would be a limiting thing. I've got very used to being able to make music by programming or playing without having to explain anything to anyone, and I assumed it would slow everything down if I had to. Actually it has made it quicker because I'm not trying to be four people simultaneously any more".

The first track to get some airing from the their first full length LP d'Demonstrator, is Megazine. A little like Daft Punk if they combined some heavy metal riffs with their electro disco madness - which I like. 
d'Demonstrator is out now on Warp Records.

Video: Hudson Mohawke - Joy Fantastic feat. Olivier Daysoul

To promote his up and coming Pegasus Rising tour of the US and UK, Hudson Mohawke has just released the video to the wonderfully animate Joy Fantastic, taken from his superb debut album Butter released last year on Warp Records.
A colourful track featuring the vocal talents of Olivier Daysoul with an equally vibrant video, directed by Konx-Om-Pax.

Listen to the new Jamie Lidell track Compass.

So after disembarking from the soul train with Jim, Jamie Lidell returns with a taster from his forthcoming new album Compass, which is released here in May and includes some interesting collaborations with Feist, Grizzly Bear and Beck.
This track Compass is far removed from anything in Lidell's back catalogue which makes it all the more intriguing. It sounds much more raw than the polished quality of Jim and far less erratic than the frenzied electronica on Muddlin' Gear and instead he takes a stripped back approach.

Compass is released through Warp Records on May 14th (Irl) and 17th (UK).

New Flying Lotus track Quakes on Warp compilation 2010

2010 is the title of a new compilation released on Warp Records which showcases brand new tracks from their newer signings as well as, some new material from their more established artists such as Flying Lotus and Bibio. Also featured is tracks from newbies Rustie, Nice Nice and De Tropix.
Quakes is a brand new track from Flying Lotus to feature on 2010 and press play below to have a listen to the dark, glitchy brilliance.

Maximo Park-Let's Get Clinical (Clark Remix)

Chris Clark's nebulous and frenzied electronic style has earned him a few fans since his Clarence Park album was released on Warp Records in 2001 and this was pretty much proved when he played to a packed crowd at the DEAF festival last month.

Totem's Flare released earlier this year, gathered him a new breed of followers, but it's hard to say if his remix of Maximo Park's Let's Get Clinical will do him any favours. Don't get me wrong I think it's a cracking remix that makes an average track really good, I just can't really see the majority of Maximo Park fans who love their indie pop getting this.

A fine remix for a Friday. Enjoy!

Warp Records introduce Nice Nice

Warp Records are yet again on the ball when it comes to signing decent talent and Portland Oregon's Nice Nice are no exception. Duo Jason Buehler and Mark Shirazi have been playing together for about 10 years and their music is all about the loops which they prefer to do rather than use samples and the result is ace.
A wonderful mish mash of hypnotic rhythms and intense, consequential guitars all ready for the listening.

The first track to be released from Nice Nice on Warp is One Hit which shall be available on 7" format from November 20th but, as an introduction to the band you can download the mp3 of One Hit and it's B-side Ark Drum from the Warp website for free. This precedes the bands new album Extra Wow which is released here in April.
Nice Nice are also about to embark on a European tour so head to the Warp site for dates and details.

Tyondai Braxton-Platinum Rows from the album Central Market

Many people would know Tyondai Braxton mostly from his work with Battles or Prefuse 73, but the super talented, multi instrumentalist has just gone and knocked my socks off with the first piece from his debut solo album. The track is called Platinum Rows and is a 10 minute scored piece recorded with the Wordless Music Orchestra from New York. Braxton composed this piece himself and it is quite thrilling to say the least. It has a cartoon soundtrack feel in parts and is perfectly paced.
Taken from the album Central Market, it gets a full release in Ireland on September 11th on Warp Records, whom are not shy in the least about this release, calling it a "full-length solo masterpiece".
After hearing Platinum Rows I am going to presume they are right. Have a listen below.

DEAF Fundraiser gig and Festival lineup.

The 2009 Dublin Electronic Arts Festival takes place in venues around Dublin from Thursday October 22nd until Saturday October 31st. To help it get underway, the DEAF crew have organised a fundraiser event in Meeting House Square in the heart of Temple Bar tomorrow night (August 21st for those of you on a different time line). If it's the weather you are worried about then no need, as a marquee style tent shall provide adequate shelter against the elements and if that's not to your satisfaction then you can indulge in the bar and restaurant set up in the square.

It kicks off at 6 bells and is tickets are a steal at €10.00. The line up is the best of Irish and the running order is as follows:

Also this years line up has just been announced and I must admit it's pretty excellent.

On the Irish front confirmed for this years festival include Legion Of Two, Sunken Foal, Neosupervital, Donal Dineen and Somadrone.

!!! Live @ Whelan's- Live Photo's

Last night a super energized !!! or Chk Chk Chk played to a solid crowd in Whelan's and I was there for a dance off with some good friends. This is the bands fourth time playing in Dublin in the last 4 years and I enjoyed it as much as the last time I caught them which was at The Electric Picnic 2 years ago. New songs were introduced last night which made me a happy punter as well as "the hits" including, Must Be The Moon and the rapturous Heart Of Hearts.

Grizzly Bear-Veckatimest: Album Review

Grizzly Bear lead singer Daniel Rossen is on to something good at the moment. After last year’s justly acclaimed Department Of Eagles album In Ear Park on which he co-collaborated, this new release sees his priority band on top form.

Veckatimest (disappointingly named after a small island in Massachusetts and not a Swedish aphrodisiac) is a shimmering, understated ritual of pop elegance with occasional electronic disturbance and the odd blast of percussive wrath. It is the rhythmic and vocal panache that elevates the music beyond similar styles; in regards to the latter, the case is helped by a contribution from each band member, resulting in subtle variety from track to track. Strong catchy opening tracks Southern Point and Two Weeks are counterbalanced nicely by later songs such as Hold Still, where the ambience is hauntingly sweet. Given previous release Yellow House was awash with electro gadgetry and trickery, this predominantly acoustic album is a significant change. Yet as the new songs are simpler in structure and production, this reformed set-up enhances the music to great effect.

On a label where the muscle-bound electronic gods such as Autechre and Aphex Twin bump shoulders, Grizzly Bear flicker quietly in a little niche off to the side. And it is a niche well worth visiting.

U: Mack up & coming gigs to include Mi Ami, !!! (Chk Chk Chk) and Squarepusher.

The U:Mack collective always have quite a high standard when it comes to putting on the more left of centre gigs and as a regular attendee, the latest round of gig announcements leaves me frothing at the mouth in excitement.


First up on April 25th in ALT is Squarepusher which, although announced back in February is one performance I am eager not to miss because A.I have never had the pleasure of catching Mr. Jenkinson live and B. I have been told he is unmissable. Here's hoping I am not disappointed.



Next up is Touch & Go newbies Mi Ami who blend afro disco beats alongside rough, screeching guitars bringing a thriving energy to your ears. They are definitely a band that will leave a mark wherever they play and their Crawdaddy show on May 9th should be no exception.



July 8th sees the return of dance punk band !!! or Chk Chk Chk to Whelan's. Having caught them live a number of times now I can honestly say this is going to be a brilliant gig. They just know how to bring it live and it should be pretty special in Whelan's of all places. Bring a spare t-shirt as you will be left in a sweaty mess.

Fans get to vote for their favourite Warp tracks to feature on a new compilation.

Electronic label Warp Records is celebrating its 20th birthday this year and they have invited fans of their music to vote for their favourite Warp tracks of all time on www.warp20.net.

The ten most popular tracks from the voting system shall then feature on a compilation along side Warp's chosen top ten tracks to be released sometime this Autumn. They are also encouraging avid fans to leave a note, message or memories attached to their favourites with the best ones featuring in the album artwork. I think it's a great to see a forward thinking label like Warp reward their loyal customers and fan base by including them in what should be a popular release. So whether it's Aphex Twin's Come to Daddy that does it for you, Grizzly Bear's Knife or Luke Vibert's Synthax that sends you into a euphoric filled sweat then have your say and get voting!

New Foggy Notions gigs announced.

The good people at Foggy Notions have just added a couple of more gigs to their ever expanding calendar. Anti-Pop Consortium hit Whelan's on May 16th while Phosphorescent plays Whelan's with a full live band on June the 1st. Good times ahead then.
