Simian Mobile Disco feat. Beth Ditto-Cruel Intentions video

The third track to be released as single from Simian Mobile Disco's latest release Temporary Pleasure is the fabulous Cruel Intentions featuring The Gossip's leading lady Beth Ditto.
Already a favourite on dance floors all around the world it's no wonder this is next choice of release for the SMD lads.
The video itself is weird and a little sinister but I like it. Happy weekend folks.

Photographs @ HWCH '09

Hats off to the organisers of the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival '09. It was a fantastic weekend of live music, photography and panel discussions. Most importantly though it showcased a lot of Irish musicians from all genres and it left me in doubt that there is a serious amount of talent in Irelend. I took some photo's of that very talent I speak of and for more you can click HERE.

Picnic picks 2009

The 2009 Electric Picnic festival is just hours away at this point and the excitement is kicking in big time. There are plenty acts to catch this year so it's going to be busy but fun and a challenge I am looking forward to.
Here are some acts that I think are must sees over the weekend.

First up is London lad David Morris who goes by the name of Boy 8-Bit while behind the decks and samplers and he has released one of my favourite dance EP's of 2009, Baltic Pine. Expect the Little Big Tent to erupt in some way when he plays this track.

Boy 8-Bit plays the Little Big Tent on the Friday @ 18.00pm.

Kormac's Big Band takes to the stage in the Body & Soul area also on the Friday night and slots nicely between main stager's MGMT and Orbital. Expect a fine mix of hip hop beats, old style swing jazz, a barber shop quartet alongside a full band and special guests, Messiah J & The Expert to all take to the stage in what should be a festival highlight.

Kormac's Big Band plays on the Body & Soul Stage on Friday @ 10pm

There is very little I need to say about Orbital other than this is going to be an EP highlight for many.
Let's hope they don't disappoint on their only Irish gig this year.

Orbital play The Main Stage on Friday @ 10.30pm

I am going to be starting Saturday checking out The xx who have become the hype darlings of '09. After seeing them outside a cramped tent at Field Day last month I am guessing that this performance will be pretty excellent. Their low fi melodic pop sound will please the ears of many after the release of their self titled debut a couple of weeks ago.

The xx play The Electric Arena on Saturday @ 14.45pm

Marina & The Diamonds are next on the must see list this year. This Welsh lass has only released a single, Obsession/Mowgli's Road and an EP, Crown Jewels this year, but her debut album is a highly anticipated release for '09. Marina has also taken to doing a pretty decent live cover version of Late Of The Pier's Space And The Woods but. the big sing-a-long will be for the addictive I Am Not A Robot.

Marina And The Diamonds play The Cosby Stage on Saturday @ 16.00pm

There is a lot of love for Bat For Lashes here and because I have not had the chance to catch Natasha Khan live she is on my must see list this weekend. Both her albums Fur & Gold and Two Suns are excellent and Mercury Nominated so her set should be a fantastic mix of the two alongside a nicely decorated stage set.

Bat For Lashes play The Electric Arena on Saturday @ 19.00pm

Berliner's Whitest Boy Alive are a great addition to this years line up. After the release of Rules earlier this year, the band have been touring throughout Europe and gladly they are stopping by Stradbally this weekend. Their dreamy pop should delight fans and newcomers, before Erland Oye heads back on tour with his other band Kings Of Convenience for the release of their new studio album, Declaration Of Dependence in October.

Whitest Boy Alive play The Cosby Stage @ 19.45pm

Sunday begins with Micachu & The Shapes. Mica Levi and co released one of my albums of 2009 Jewellery back in March through Rough Trade Records. Her use of unorthodox instruments (such a hover, CD Rack and broken bottles) to create her sound have led to her being adored by the music press. A must go see this weekend.

Micachu & The Shapes play The Cosby Stage on Sunday @ 14.15pm

Simian Mobile Disco played a cracking set at the EP two years ago and with a shiny new album just on the shelves Temporary Pleasure, James Ford and Jas Shaw shall undoubtedly have you dancing from the word go.

Simian Mobile Disco play The Electric Arena on Sunday @ 16.15pm

Belgium based duo Aeroplane are at this stage well known for their excellent remixes of Friendly Fires, Grace Jones and MGMT tracks making them the perfect picnic pair.
Their disco and psychedelic pop sounds always create a fun atmosphere and for the third time this month I shall be embracing it.

Aeroplane play the Little Big tent on Sunday @ 18.00pm

Erol Alkan is a DJ supreme, Producer extrodenaire and Remix master and shall be an excellent ending to this years festivities in Stradbally. He keeps kids dancing and if this is what you are looking for then Erol will definitely not disappoint.

Erol Alkan plays the Little Big Tent on Sunday @ 22.00pm

DEAF Fundraiser gig and Festival lineup.

The 2009 Dublin Electronic Arts Festival takes place in venues around Dublin from Thursday October 22nd until Saturday October 31st. To help it get underway, the DEAF crew have organised a fundraiser event in Meeting House Square in the heart of Temple Bar tomorrow night (August 21st for those of you on a different time line). If it's the weather you are worried about then no need, as a marquee style tent shall provide adequate shelter against the elements and if that's not to your satisfaction then you can indulge in the bar and restaurant set up in the square.

It kicks off at 6 bells and is tickets are a steal at €10.00. The line up is the best of Irish and the running order is as follows:
6.30pm Patrick Kelleher & His Cold Dead Hands

7.20pm Channel One
8.15pm Thread Pulls
9.00pm The Jimmy Cake
9.45pm Boxcutter
10.30pm Dark Room Notes
11.30 Spilly Walker
12.15pm Sarsparilla

DJ's: Skinny Wolves, Maximum Joy/VJ Metaldragon + guests.

Also this years line up has just been announced and I must admit it's pretty excellent.
International Artists confirmed include Modeselektor, Clark, David Holmes, Andy Votel, Tim Exile, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Surgeon and Planetary Assault Systems.
On the Irish front confirmed for this years festival include Legion Of Two, Sunken Foal, Neosupervital, Donal Dineen and Somadrone.

Festivals a go go

This August bank holiday sees a tonne of adventures at the ready for music fans.
We have Castlepalooza in Charleville Castle, Tullamore showcasing some of the best Irish music currently doing the rounds. Expect great things from the sublime Ambience Affair, the boisterous Super Extra Bonus Party, Prodigy-esque antics from Noise Control and get in fancy dress for the ultimate Rocky Horror Picture Show performance.

For ravers and rockers, Marley Park is where to head this weekend with Metallica, Alice In Chains and Mastodon all playing there on Saturday August 1st. David Guetta, Fatboy Slim and Fake Blood shall then be pumping out beats of the large variety on Sunday August 2nd.

Lastly for the adventurists this weekend, check out Field Day Festival in London's Victoria Park. It has a pretty darn great lineup with Mogwai, The Horrors, Micachu and The Shapes, Mystery Jets and Final Fantasy all ready to ear please. You also have the chance to bring out your inner kid with The Young Offenders Ping Pong, Onion Peeling Contest and the Egg and Spoon and Sack races all taking place throughout the festival. What more could you want.

Oxegen 2009 round up...

So even though it was last minute I headed down to Oxegen at the weekend, slinging about in the mud filled Punchestown racecourse. I missed the Friday celebrations due to other commitments but made an effort to wade about on Saturday and Sunday.

Highlights included first band of Saturday for me, Messiah J And The Expert, who brought the noise and packed out the Red Bull Academy tent. It baffles me as to why this band are not bigger than they are, as the stage show it clean cut, animated and fun. With Messiah J's stellar showmanship and The Expert's ingenious use of samples and brilliant beats bringing the tent to boiling point, The Boys Have Had Enough, Keep The Noise Down and Abandon Ship all had the crowd in an ecstatic frenzy as Turn The Magic On and forthcoming single Geography encouraged a joyous sing-a-long.

Another highlight for me was the Friendly Fires in The Green Spheres tent late on the Sunday afternoon. Having caught them two months previously in Waterford I was expecting good things and I was far from disappointed. Their audience was a mish mash of people of all ages who just wanted to dance and sing to their favourite FF songs. While the tent erupted momentarily for Jump In The Pool and Skeleton Boy, it was Jack Bevan from Foals' drumming presence on album favourite On Board that added to the party vibe of the set alongside front man Ed MacFarlanes consistent pleas for everyone to dance. Hope they get back over here soon.

Next up was Foals in the same tent as FF. It was my 5th time catching them live and they didn't disappoint. Yannis Philippakas may have inspired a new generation of haircuts and check shirt wearers but I doubt his stage theatrics and guitar playing are easily mimicked. Foals as a band are tight and deliver each track precisely. Olympic Airways, Electric Bloom and Balloons all dazzled with heavy riffs and erratic chunky drums while the popular Cassius and Two Steps, Twice inspired some much warranted moshpit action up the front.

This years hype-o-meter was all about Florence and The Machine. Her debut album Lungs bolted into the Irish Charts at number 3 on Friday and the UK Charts at number 2 yesterday, yet whoever thought it was a great idea to put her on the relatively small Red Bull Academy stage need to have a bit of a re-think. Stuffed to the gills is the only way to describe the scene before Florence Welch took to the stage with, undoubtedly the most rapturous reception of the weekend. It seems every person in the place knew every word to every song and deafening roars of approval, human pyramids and crowd surfing came with Dog Days Are Over, Cosmic Love, Kiss With A Fist and Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up). A true talent with a powerful voice, Florence is only just beginning.

Other honourable mentions from the weekend: Nialler9's warm up DJ set for the weird and mellow Fever Ray. Some excellent tracks including Your Love My Girls (Animal Collective/Frankie Knuckles mash up), the Duke Dumont remix of BFL Daniel and Simian Mobile Disco's Audacity Of Huge were witnessed and danced to by the White Lies boys.
The Yeah Yeah Yeah's trying their level best to to fight off the pouring rain and poor sound on the main stage on Saturday as did Bloc Party. And So I Watch You From Afar tearing the Imro New Sounds stage to pieces with their thrilling set and lastly Digitalism playing Zdarlight to a load of 'mad out of it's' on the Saturday evening.
Goodbye mud it's been special to say the very least.

Electric Picnic 2009 the rumours...

Every year there are a certain amount of people who make the pilgrimage to Stradbally for the Electric Picnic. I am one of those people and I am proud to say haven't missed one yet!

So as the announcement came that Festival Republic would be investing in this years festival, alarm bells went off. For those of you who don't know Aiken promotions are no longer taking part in promoting and booking acts for the Picnic, therefore to keep it alive and well another promoter had to come in and help POD out in keeping things going. Festival Republic are formerly known as Mean Fiddler and is co-owned by MCD. So does this mean a change in music variety, the chilled settings of Stradbally estate and the age limit of 18+ ? I for one hope not but I am happy for a little change if it means keeping the EP going.
The line-up rumours are working over time as we speak and we might just get to see the likes of Orbital's return, David Byrne, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver, Morrissey, Ryan Adams, Okkervil River and Fleetwood Mac all making appearances in a beautiful place in the country!
Again these are just rumours but it's fun to speculate. Bestival in the Isle Of White, taking place a week later is boasting quite a strong line-up with Soulwax, Kraftwerk, MGMT, Massive Attack and Metronomy all confirmed. Here is hoping one or all of the above shall play EP.
